The Shamkhor hydroelectric power plant built in the middle of the Kura river has made it possible to solve many economic problems such as: The production of 810 min kwh of cheap electric power per year. A supply of 400min cubic meters per year of irrigation water to the Ganja-Kazag land, which has enabled farming on 75,4 thou.ha. The supply of 120 min cubic meters of drinking and service water to the Ganjacity and its industrial regions. The hydraulic power complex includes a river channel dam, a flood-plain dam, permanent and diversion spillways, water intake, turbine penstock, powerhouse, irrigation water intake, and tailrace tunnel. The permanent and diversion spillway has three bays, 7.5 m wide each, and is designed to pass water discharges of 2750 cubic meters per sec.
The river-channel and flood-plain dams have a total crest length of 3800m and a maximum height of 70m.The total volume of dams is 13.6min cubic m. A reservoir of 2677 min cubic meters storage capacity is used for power generation, industrial water supply and farming needs. The powerhouse is equipped with two hydropower units, each of 190 thou.kW capacity. The electric power output to the power system of the Republic is 810min. kWh a year.
To present some idea of the size of the work it is worth mentitioning that it included:
- 1850 thousand cubic meters of soft soil excavation
- 3280 thousand cubic meters of rock excavation
- 14440 thousand cubic meters of fills (including 700 thousand cubic meters of hidraulic fills)
- 670 thousand cubic meters of concrete and reinforced concrete
- 114 thousand tonnes of steel structures and mechanism placing.
